%humani[e89,jmc] The development of humanitarianism

Some humanitarian ideas are old; some are new.

	1. ``Thou shalt not kill'' obviously had a very narrow
interpretation among the ancient Jews. It is interesting to ask
why the qualifications, e.g. it's ok to kill enemies and witches,
were not made explicit.

	2. Is the wrongfulness of slavery an 18th century idea?

	3. Animal rights is even newer. So are explicit children's
rights. Are these as much a British development as it seems?
